Short Bio
David Jones, MD, FAAFP has recently transitioned from the position of President and Director of Medical Education for The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) to President Emeritus and voting member of the Board of Directors of the IFM. His area of expertise within the IFM is the focus on the therapeutic partnership and the importance of the transition within primary care to the development of healing relationships. Dr. Jones is presently in his fourth year as a Scholar at The Institute for Integrative Health. His project title is: “A Coherent Architecture for 21st Century Clinical Practice and Medical Education.” The Scholars Program at TIIH supports preeminent internationally recognized individuals who are pursuing work that promotes an integrative approach to health and wellness. The program makes possible bold, transformative research that is unlikely to receive support from conventional or conservative funders.
Dr. Jones is a recognized expert in the areas of functional medicine, the science of nutrition and lifestyle changes for optimal health, and managed care, as well as the daily professional functions consistent with the modern specialty of family practice (FAAFP). Dr. Jones is the recipient of the 1997 Linus Pauling Award in Functional Medicine. Over the last two decades, he has helped guide the ongoing development of the educational and clinical applications of functional medicine.
IFM provides continuing medical education for physicians and other healthcare professionals. Educational activities focus on assessment and treatment of underlying causes of illness in order to maintain and restore health and improve function using a personalized approach. Dr. Jones has presided over a continuous quality improvement process that has made IFM’s educational programs the most sought after in the field of functional integrative medicine. He is editor-in-chief and co-author of the Textbook of Functional Medicine, first published in 2005, and authored Healthy Changes, a patient-centered 16-week workbook that focuses on healthy habits. He was lead author of 21st CENTURY MEDICINE: A New Model for Medical Education and Practice, available at the IFM website (www.functionalmedicine.org).
Dr. Jones has been blessed with three daughters. His older daughters, Dana and Ursula, are married and raising families while coordinating their own professional careers. His youngest daughter, Justine, has completed her BA degree at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon and is completing her first book. His wife, Kathi Bowen-Jones, teaches English and social studies at Ashland High School. Dr. Jones’s interests include tennis, hiking, literature and an abiding interest in the strange animals that we call humans.
